This week on The Super Fantastic Leadership Show we are in the conversation about taking a great vacation and renewal. How do we take a vacation that is really exceptional for us and how do we set ourselves up for a wonderful “break” and then it falls completely flat. We all have a fantasy that we build up about taking a vacation and one of the biggest things that drive this is that we wait too long to renew our energy. In other words, you can only drive a car for a certain period of time before you need to fill the tank up with gas. And, if that car is on empty, you aren’t going to get anywhere.
One of the reasons that our vacations often fall flat for us is that we often wait too long to actually renew ourselves. The second reason that our vacations can fall flat is that we have a believe that everything will be different once we have a vacation. Often times we allow ourselves to become so depleted that our vacation becomes a recovery time to get ourselves to neutral versus building ourselves into even more positive energy and rest. The third myth about “vacation” is that we don’t have to go anywhere to renew ourselves either. Giving ourselves “mini-vacations” in our day to renew ourselves is not only valuable but is really mandatory for our full energy management. Another way that we can sabotage our renewal time is by desiring to get every loose end taken care of and then, not relying on others to take care of the rest of the details while we are away. Not being able to ask for support while we are away is another way that we sabotage our renewal efforts. Saying that we are going to “check email intermittently” really makes no sense if we are actually desiring renewal time for ourselves. This really means that you are going to be checking email once you have panicked yourself enough to compulsively check it or when you’ve been having too much fun and want to bring yourself back down a bit.
So, how do you like to create renewal for yourself and what is one of the best vacations that you’ve ever taken? We would love to hear about it. Feel free to share your comments with us below.
